English for Academic Purposes

Examination Prep

English for Academic Purposes

A bridge between general English fluency and the specific style universities expect. We cover academic reading, essay writing, citation, presentations and seminar discussion — all framed around critical thinking. Finish the programme with multiple marked essays, a research-style presentation, and the study habits to thrive at university.

1. Course Description

English for Academic Purposes (EAP) prepares you for the demands of university study in English — from following dense lectures to writing well-argued essays, presenting research, and contributing to seminar discussions. It's the bridge between general English fluency and the specific style that universities expect.

We focus on academic reading (skimming dense journal articles, finding arguments, taking efficient notes), academic writing (essay structure, argumentation, citation, paraphrasing), and academic speaking (seminar discussion, presentations, defending your point of view). All skills are framed around critical thinking — not just English, but how to think and argue in English.

By the end of the programme you'll have written multiple full academic essays with feedback, delivered a research-style presentation, and built the study habits that will carry you through your first semester.

2. Key Highlights
  • Essay Writing — Master the academic essay end-to-end: planning, thesis statements, paragraph structure, evidence, and the all-important critical voice.
  • Academic Vocabulary — Build your active vocabulary using the Academic Word List — the 570 word families that show up across every university discipline.
  • Presentation Skills — Deliver research-style presentations with proper structure, signposting language, slide design, and Q&A handling.
  • Research Skills — Source evaluation, note-taking, summarising, and how to read a journal article without drowning in it.
  • Citation Methods — Hands-on practice with APA, MLA and Harvard referencing — and how to paraphrase without crossing into plagiarism.
3. Who Is It For
